Lash Lift vs Eyelash Extensions: Which Is Right for Your Lashes?

In this blog, I'll walk you through the lash lift vs. lash extensions decision exactly the way I would in a consultation, so you can settle the eyelash lift vs. extensions question for your own lashes (yes, including what each one really costs over a year).

Lash Lift vs Eyelash Extensions: Which Is Right for Your Lashes?

Here's the dream: you roll out of bed, glance in the mirror, and your lashes are already done. No curler, no mascara, no panda eyes by 3pm. Both a lash lift and eyelash extensions can get you there. They just take very different routes.

And I get it, choosing is confusing. One friend swears her lift changed her life, another hasn't missed an infill in years, and every salon page tells you something slightly different. So let me make it simple. After more than 20 years of doing both, here's my honest take: if your natural lashes have decent length, a lash lift and tint is gorgeous and low-maintenance. If you want length and fullness your own lashes can't give you, extensions win.

Below I'll walk you through the lash lift vs lash extensions decision exactly the way I would in a consultation, so you can settle the eyelash lift vs extensions question for your own lashes (yes, including what each one really costs over a year). Let's get into it.

Key takeaways

  • A lash lift and tint curls and darkens your own lashes. Eyelash extensions add individual synthetic lashes to them.
  • At Jay Lash and Brow, a lash lift and tint costs $130 and lasts around 6 to 8 weeks.
  • A classic full set of extensions costs $165, with infills every 2 to 3 weeks from $85.
  • Over 12 months, lash lifts cost about $780 to $1,170, while classic extensions with 3-weekly infills cost about $1,845 (prices as of October 2026).

Lash Lift vs Eyelash Extensions: The Short Answer

The difference between a lash lift and eyelash extensions is that a lift curls and tints your own lashes for 6 to 8 weeks, while extensions add new lashes that need an infill every 2 to 3 weeks.

Choose a lash lift if:

  • your natural lashes are a reasonable length but grow straight or point down
  • you want to wake up with lashes that look done, with almost no upkeep
  • you'd rather book every couple of months than every couple of weeks

Choose eyelash extensions if:

  • your natural lashes are short, sparse or fine
  • you want visible length, density or a glam look
  • you're happy to come in for an infill every 2 to 3 weeks

Still on the fence? Totally normal. The table and five quick questions below will settle it.

Which One Suits Your Lashes? Eyelash Extensions vs Eyelash Lift

In a consultation I don't start with the menu. I start with your lashes (and, honestly, your week). Here are the five questions I ask every client, and where each answer usually points.

1. How long and full are your natural lashes?

A lift can only work with the length you already have. It curls and darkens, but it can't add a single hair. If your lashes are a decent length but hide because they grow straight, a lift reveals them. If they're short or sparse, extensions are the only way to add length and density.

A quick check at home: curl your lashes with an eyelash curler and look straight ahead. If you love what you see, a lift gives you that look for weeks. If curled lashes still look short, extensions will suit you better.

Leans lift: good natural length. Leans extensions: short, sparse or fine lashes.

2. Do your lashes grow straight, point down, or curl already?

Straight and downward-pointing lashes are where a lift shines, because the curl suddenly shows off length you didn't know you had. It's also a favourite for hooded eyes, where straight lashes tend to disappear under the lid. If your lashes already curl, a lift adds little, and extensions are the way to get a visible change.

Leans lift: straight or downward lashes. Leans extensions: lashes that already curl.

3. How much upkeep can you commit to?

A lift is one appointment every 6 to 8 weeks with nothing to do in between. Extensions shed with your natural lashes, so you'll need an infill every 2 to 3 weeks to keep them full. Leave it longer and the infill costs more: a classic full set infill is $85 at 2 weeks but $140 at 4 weeks.

Leans lift: you want to set and forget. Leans extensions: you're happy with a regular booking.

4. What does your week look like?

Gym sessions, swimming, saunas, sleeping on your side, rubbing your eyes in hay fever season and oil-based skincare all shorten how long extensions stay put. None of them bother a lift much once the first day or two has passed. If your routine is busy and active, a lift is far more forgiving. If you go with extensions, my eyelash extension aftercare guide covers how to protect them.

Leans lift: active, outdoorsy, low-fuss routines. Leans extensions: routines where you can follow aftercare.

5. Do you have sensitive eyes or wear contacts?

Both treatments use products close to the eye. A lift uses lifting and setting solutions, and extensions use a lash adhesive. If you've reacted to beauty products before, tell me when you book and ask for a patch test first. Any redness, swelling or irritation after a treatment is a job for your GP or optometrist, not an aftercare tip.

My rule of thumb: if you like your lashes curled, choose a lift. If you wish you had more of them, choose extensions.

What a Lash Lift and Tint Involves

Think of a lash lift and tint as a perm and a tint for your lashes (minus the '80s vibes). It takes your natural lashes from straight to curled and darkens them, so they look like you're wearing mascara without any on. I cleanse your lashes, shape them over a soft silicone shield that sets the curl, then apply a lifting solution followed by a setting solution. The tint goes on next, and I finish with a conditioning treatment.

The curl lasts around 6 to 8 weeks. It doesn't drop all at once; it grows out gradually as your lashes shed and new ones come through.

The honest downsides:

  • It adds no length. A lift shows off the lashes you have, and that's all.
  • There's an in-between stage near the end, when new straight lashes grow in among the curled ones.
  • Results depend on your lashes. Very short or sparse lashes won't look dramatically different.
  • Lifting too often can dry lashes out, so it isn't something to repeat every few weeks.

If you've heard about the softer Korean version, I've covered it in what is a Korean lash lift. For prices and booking, see my lash lift and tint in St Ives page.

What Eyelash Extensions Involve

Eyelash extensions are individual synthetic lashes bonded, one at a time, to your natural lashes with a specialist adhesive. Done well, each extension sits on a single natural lash, so it moves with it and sheds with it.

There are three main styles:

  • Classic: one extension per natural lash, for a natural, defined look. Classic half set $125, Classic full set $165, Glam full set $195.
  • Hybrid: a mix of classic lashes and fine handmade fans for texture and a little more fullness. Hybrid full set $230.
  • Volume: fans of several ultra-fine lashes on each natural lash for density. Natural volume set $230, Glam volume set $260, Full volume set $290.

Because your natural lashes shed every day, the extensions go with them. An infill every 2 to 3 weeks replaces what has fallen and refreshes what has grown out, which keeps the set looking full. I explain why in how long eyelash extensions last.

The honest downsides:

  • It's an ongoing commitment of time and money, not a one-off treatment.
  • There are aftercare rules: no oil near the eyes, daily cleansing, gentle sleeping.
  • Retention varies from person to person, even with the same set and the same technician.

The Real Cost Over 12 Months

In summary, a year of lash lifts at Jay Lash and Brow costs about $780 to $1,170, while classic extensions with infills every three weeks cost about $1,845.

Here's where it gets interesting. The price per visit hides the real difference, so let's look at the whole year at my October 2026 prices.

| Treatment | Price per visit | Visits per year | Approx. cost per year |

| :---- | :---- | :---- | :---- |

| Lash lift and tint, every 6 to 8 weeks | $130 | 6 to 9 | $780 to $1,170 |

| Classic full set, infills every 3 weeks | $165 set, $105 infill | 1 set + 16 infills | $1,845 |

| Classic full set, infills every 2 weeks | $165 set, $85 infill | 1 set + 25 infills | $2,290 |

| Hybrid full set, infills every 3 weeks | $230 set, $140 infill | 1 set + 16 infills | $2,470 |

| Full volume set, infills every 3 weeks | $290 set, $160 infill | 1 set + 16 infills | $2,850 |

Jay Lash and Brow prices as of October 2026.

To work out your own number, take the full set price and add the number of infills you'll have in a year multiplied by your infill price.

And here's the one that surprises almost everyone: stretching a classic set to an infill every 4 weeks doesn't save money at my prices. Twelve infills at $140 lands on the same $1,845 a year, and your lashes look sparse by week 4.

These figures leave out the occasional fresh full set, eyelash removal ($50), and aftercare products. If you want the full Sydney price picture, I've put it together in what eyelash extensions cost in Sydney.

Which Is Better for Your Natural Lashes?

The short answer is that neither treatment damages healthy lashes when it's done well. Damage comes from heavy sets, over-processing and picking, not from the treatments themselves.

Quick biology lesson (I promise it's short): your lashes are always renewing. According to StatPearls, a medical reference on the NCBI Bookshelf, each lash grows for about 4 to 10 weeks, then rests for 4 to 9 months before it falls out and a new one starts. That's why lashes shed every day, with or without a treatment.

  • Where a lash lift can go wrong: solution left on too long, or lifts booked too close together, can leave lashes dry, brittle or frizzy. Spacing your lifts out and choosing an experienced technician avoids most of this.
  • Where extensions can go wrong: an extension that's too long or heavy for the natural lash can strain it. A sensitivity to the adhesive can cause irritation. And picking or pulling extensions off at home takes natural lashes with them. If you want them off, book a removal ($50).
  • Do lashes go back to normal after a lash lift? Yes. The curl grows out with your natural lashes as they shed and are replaced, so within a couple of months your lashes are back to their usual shape.

Day-to-Day Living With Each

Day to day, a lift asks almost nothing of you. Extensions need a little more love, but nothing complicated.

Mascara, makeup and water

Yes, you can put mascara on a lash lift. Wait 24 to 48 hours after your appointment, then use a regular, non-waterproof formula and remove it gently. Most clients find they stop reaching for it.

Extensions are different. Mascara on extensions clumps them, and taking it off means rubbing and oil, both of which loosen the bond. Keep them dry for the first 24 hours, then use oil-free products around the eyes.

Sleep, gym and swimming

After the first day or two, a lift has very few rules. Sleep how you like, train how you like, swim when you like.

With extensions, side-sleeping crushes and twists them, so a silk pillowcase helps. Sweat and chlorine are fine once the first 24 hours have passed, as long as you rinse and cleanse afterward. Long saunas and steam rooms soften the adhesive, so keep them short.

Your morning routine

With a lift, you wake up with curled, tinted lashes. No curler, often no mascara.

With extensions, you brush them through with a clean spoolie and cleanse them once a day. It takes a minute, and my eyelash extension aftercare guide walks you through it step by step.

Can You Switch, or Do Both?

Yes, you can get lash extensions after a lash lift, but I like the lift to relax first. A freshly lifted lash sits at a different angle, which changes how extensions attach and how the set looks. Tell me if you've had a lift when you book, and I'll advise on timing.

Going the other way is different. You can't lift lashes that are wearing extensions. The set has to come off first with a professional removal ($50), and then your lashes need to be clean and bare for the lift.

A path a lot of clients take:

  1. Try a lash lift first. It's a low-commitment way to see how you feel about lashes that look done every day.
  2. Move to extensions for a season, a holiday, or an event when you want more length and drama.
  3. Switch back to a lift when you want a break from infills.

If you're planning for a wedding or a big event, book a trial set well ahead so there's time to adjust the style before the day.

How I Decide in a Consultation

When you sit down in my St Ives studio, the decision usually takes me less than a minute of looking, plus two questions.

First I look at your lashes with your eyes open and closed. I check how long they are, which direction they grow, how dense they are across the lid, and how much of them the lid hides. Lashes that are long but point down tell me a lift will make a big difference. Lashes that are short, fine or patchy tell me only extensions will give you the change you want.

Then I ask you two things: how do you want your lashes to look, and how often can you realistically come in? The first tells me whether we're aiming for natural or noticeable. The second tells me whether extensions will fit your life or become a chore.

And if a lift will give you everything you're after, I'll tell you so, even though extensions are the bigger booking. You'll be happier, your lashes will be happier, and you'll come back because you love the result.

Lash Lift vs Extensions FAQs

Which is more damaging, a lash lift or lash extensions?

Neither damages healthy lashes when it's done well. Lift problems come from over-processing or lifting too often. Extension problems come from heavy sets, adhesive sensitivity and picking. A patch test and a sensible schedule prevent most of it.

Can you put mascara on a lash lift?

Yes, after the first 24 to 48 hours. Use a regular, non-waterproof mascara and remove it gently so the curl lasts. Most clients find they no longer need it.

Can you get lash extensions after a lash lift?

Yes. Let the lift relax first and tell your technician you've had one, because the lifted angle changes how extensions sit.

Do lashes go back to normal after a lash lift?

Yes. The curl grows out with your natural lashes as they shed and are replaced over roughly 6 to 8 weeks.

Is lash botox the same as a lash lift?

Lash botox usually describes a lift with an extra conditioning step, not a different treatment. Ask exactly what's included before you book.

Is a lash lift cheaper than eyelash extensions?

Yes, by about half over a year. At Jay Lash and Brow a lash lift and tint is $130 every 6 to 8 weeks, while a classic full set is $165 plus infills every 2 to 3 weeks.

Which lasts longer, a lash lift or extensions?

A lash lift lasts around 6 to 8 weeks with no top-ups. Extensions can be kept indefinitely, but only with infills every 2 to 3 weeks.

Should I get a lash lift or extensions at Jay Lash and Brow?

Text me on 0401 797 455 and tell me about your lashes, and I'll tell you which I'd recommend. We can confirm it together at your appointment in St Ives.
